ARTWORKS: YOUNG ARTISTS OF THE YEAR AWARDS
The Clore Duffield Foundation launched the Artworks: Young Artists of the Year Awards
in 1999, for a five year period, as part of a wide-ranging programme to support the visual arts in schools.
The aim of the programme - comprising a number of initiatives including the Awards themselves, together with Research, Publications, and Children’s Art Day – was to inspire and support teachers; to enable and
provide funding for art in schools; and to create exciting new opportunities for children to work closely
with galleries, museums and practising artists. More than 1,800 schools and 200,000 children and young
people participated in Artworks between 1999 and 2004, making it the biggest and most influential scheme
of its kind in the UK.
Following the cessation of the Foundation's funding, in 2005 we decided to undertake a full assessment of the
impact of the Artworks Awards scheme, as wider ministerial interest, and a growing engagement with art in
schools, made us look again at the form and future of the Awards. In close liaison with our partners -
including schools, museums, galleries, artists, education bodies and the media - we worked on a major
consultation and feasibility study to explore a number of options for further growth and development.
It is now hoped that the Artworks: Young Artists of the Year Awards will be re-launched in a fresh
new format - this time organised and run by Tate. We will continue to post relevant information on this site,
including the launch date (when it is known), entry criteria and key contacts, so do please check back to this
and the Awards page for updates.
In the meantime, we trust that you will continue to browse www.art-works.org.uk, which remains an invaluable
resource for visual arts education in the UK. The virtual Gallery of Winners in the Awards section comprises a searchable,
illustrated archive of all previous Artworks Award-winning entries, and provides a mine of practical
inspiration for any teacher planning art & design-based projects.
Children’s Art Day 2006
This year, Children’s Art Day took place on 29 June and over the weekend of 1-2 July in galleries,
museums, schools and other organisations around the UK.
In 2006 the national programme of events was run by engage, with funding from the Clore Duffield Foundation;
the Office of the Mayor of London organised a major event in Trafalgar Square. The national programme featured
more than 120 separate events UK-wide.
