Childrens Art Day 2006
The purpose of Childrens Art Day is to encourage and inspire children to engage
with art in museums and galleries and at school.
From 2000 to 2004, the Clore Duffield Foundation worked in partnership with engage (the National
Association for Gallery Education, www.engage.org)
to offer 50 grants of up to £500 to support innovative gallery-based projects celebrating Childrens
Art Day. This funding came to an end in 2004.
This year, Childrens Art Day took place on Thursday 29 June, and during the weekend of 1-2 July. The
national events programme was managed by engage, with funding from the Clore Duffield Foundation, and
involved 120 special art activities across the UK. In parallel, the Office of the Mayor of London ran a major
Childrens Art Day event in Trafalgar Square.
Over 100 schools, community centres, and national and regional galleries and museums participated in the Day,
which attracted 3750 children, young people and families.
Participants commented:
- I think CAD is an excellent idea and we would be pleased to take part next year.
- General feedback was excellent … people were pleased with the quality of the event, the assistance,
the exciting materials and the atmosphere.
- Trafalgar Square was a great location; thought the event was very successful with lots of families
taking part.
