Facilitate first-time visits or build relationships with a new group. Clues in our Clothes was a
project organised by Kirklees Community History Service in Huddersfield involving pupils from a rural, mainly white,
school and a multi-cultural city-centre school. Artist Shanaz Gulzar visited both schools, took photographs of each child
and asked each child to bring in a scrap of material and anecdote relating to their family. Each class spent a day at the
museum where they looked at both old and new fabrics and quilts from the local area, studying patterns and designs
to try to identify cultural origins. Each child was given a photo of a child from the other school, printed on fabric, and
asked to decorate the material with suitable patterns and decorations. In the end, all the fabric pieces were joined
together as banners and the children and families, from both schools, were invited for a celebratory event where
they got a chance to see what their 'partners' had done with their portraits.
