Children's Art Day in Trafalgar Square

Children's Art Day was celebrated in Trafalgar Square, London on Sunday 4 July 2004. An estimated 8,000 people attended and participated in workshops and watched performance artists moving around the Square as giant butterflies and forest creatures.

In the Square outside the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, thousands of children, young people and their families made their own public art inspired by the flower imagery of fourth plinth sculptor Marc Quinn. Dozens of artists were on hand to help children create flags, flowers, insects and sculpture. The themes of the workshops included Insects and Garlands for the Square; Plant a Seed which involved children making plasticine sunflowers and animating them on a computer to watch them grow; Floating Gardens where children made and floated water lilies in the fountains; storytelling sessions and a grass maze for younger children.

This event was made possible by kind support from the Mayor of London and Creative Partnerships. The Clore Duffield Foundation looks forward to working with these and other partners to organise an even bigger event next year!
