WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR CHILDREN'S TURNER PRIZE
A digital four-screen reinterpretation of Hogarth's Marriage à la Mode; ceramics inspired by William de Morgan; photography inspired by the work of Andreas Gursky; designer bird tables complete with specially designed bird food and bird sounds; a dress made entirely out of gloves, an animated retelling of the Ramayana; video and installation inspired by a visit to Sachenhausen Concentration Camp in Germany; a dance piece created and performed in empty Victorian swimming baths in Manchester, graffiti and VJ films are among the winning projects in this year's ARTWORKS Young Artists of the Year Awards.
The Awards will be announced by Artworks Patron, Loyd Grossman OBE and presented by Damon Albarn, Antony Gormley, the Rt Hon Estelle Morris, Minister for the Arts, and Dame Vivien Duffield at a Ceremony at Tate Modern on Children's Art Day, Thursday 1 July, with an exhibition of winning works at Tate Modern, curated by artist Richard Wentworth, running until Sunday 18 July.
Works by children from thirty-two schools throughout the UK, with ages ranging from 4 to 18, have been selected by a panel of judges including National Portrait Gallery Director, Sandy Nairne; architect David Adjaye and Tate Liverpool Director, Christoph Grunenberg.
In addition to awards totalling £61,000, ARTWORKS winners this year will also receive a specially commissioned, limited edition, signed print by Marc Quinn, whose next project is a sculpture for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in 2005.
The ARTWORKS programme, funded by the Clore Duffield Foundation, has developed over the last five years as Britain's most prestigious showcase for art and creative teaching in schools. The programme includes influential research investigating policy and practice in school-based art education; support for events all over the country for Children's Art Day, and the annual ARTWORKS Awards, which reach out to every school in the UK, and have inspired the work of 37,000 school children and teachers.
Children's Art Day this year will include hundreds of events for families and school children on Thursday 1 July and over the following weekend, 3 and 4 July. From a giant, free, art workshop in Trafalgar Square, London, to an art bus in Glasgow, children's creativity will be celebrated all over the UK.
