ARTWORKS PUBLISHES NEW RESEARCH ON THE STATE OF ART AND DESIGN EDUCATION

State of the Art, published on Children's Art Day, Thursday 1 July 2004, is a review of the state of art & design education in the UK after five years of intense change in policies and programmes relating to education and creativity. This research has been devised, managed and funded by the Clore Duffield Foundation as part of the ARTWORKS programme.

Through a process of qualitative and quantitative research - involving questionnaires to schools, interviews with educationalists working in key organisations in the field, and an analysis of five years of ARTWORKS winning work - State of the Art provides both a constructive overview and a critique of the state art & design education.

The report makes a series of recommendations for future action including commitments to a well-funded, nationwide art & design entitlement embracing schools, galleries, museums and other cultural sites; a comprehensive approach to allocating resources and expertise in art & design education based on equity across all schools; and a secure and regular investment programme for the continuing professional development of art & design teachers, at times and in locations that meet their professional and personal commitments.

Contributors include: Paul Brennan, Chair, Association of Advisers in Art and Design; Bev Joicey, former HMI for Art & Design; Peter Muschamp, Senior Inspector for Art & Design, Ofsted; John Steers, Director, National Society for Education in Art & Design; and Richard Wentworth, artist and Master of Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford. The report is written and researched by Rick Rogers, Siobhan Edwards and Fiona Godfrey.

State of the Art is available, free of charge, on the ARTWORKS website, along with copies of earlier research projects and full details of the ARTWORKS programme: www.art-works.org.uk
