The entries of ten schools were Highly Commended in the 2003 Artworks Awards:

Working with Artists

PAPERMAKING AT COUNTY UPPER
COUNTY UPPER SCHOOL, BURY ST EDMUNDS
Age range: 14-16
Teacher: David Hodgson
Artist: Liz McGowan

Liz McGowan introduced papermaking to staff and students and explored artistic inspiration. Pupils developed ideas around patterns and texture in nature and also worked on self-portraits. At the same time, Liz McGowan worked on a new piece of her own, which provided a point of reference and discussion. The pupils produced art work in 2- and 3D which is delicate and individual.

CONFESSIONS
CAISTER HIGH SCHOOL, NORFOLK
Age range: 14-15
Teacher: Geoffrey Litchfield
Artists: Ylva Rosen, Ann Wisker

Pupils worked with print-maker Ylva Rosen and graphic artist Ann Wisker on monoprinting and phototransfer methods. They also toured a local screen-printing firm. Images and poems on the theme of confessions were transferred onto transparent acrylic to create a collaborative site-specific sculpture. Pupils explored a new medium and gained insights into the graphic design profession.

HOME STREET
HARBOROUGH MONTESSORI PRE-SCHOOL, LEICESTERSHIRE
Age range: 2-5
Teacher: Laura O'Brien
Artist: Mikki Longley

Children worked with land- and townscape painter, Mikki Longley to explore the themes of home and community. Pupils brought in photos of their homes, and went on a walk around the locality to gather inspiration for a collage frieze for the classroom. The project was based around a relevant and meaningful theme and, at the same time, introduced children to life as an artist.

EVERYDAY FOLKLORE
HASLINGDEN HIGH SCHOOL, LANCASHIRE
Age range: 14-15
Teacher: Richard Graves
Artist: Marjan Wouda

Pupils submitted letters of application to be involved in this project working with sculptor-in-residence, Marjan Wouda. Together they explored the links between everyday experience and folklore and created stoneware relief panels. Over five days pupils built a successful relationship with the artist and developed a subtle understanding of the medium.

GLASS IN THE 21st CENTURY
THE HERMITAGE LEARNING COMMUNITY, COUNTY DURHAM
Age range: 14-18
Teacher: Hilary Chopin
Artist: Harry Ramsey

Glass artist Harry Ramsey devised a scheme of work with the School on stained and sculptural glass. Pupils learned a wide range of skills including mould-making, fusing, bonding, slumping and sandblasting. This was an ambitious project in which pupils developed enthusiasm for an entirely new medium.

IN OUR ABSENCE
LOWTON HIGH SCHOOL, WARRINGTON
Age range: 11-12
Teacher: Dorothy Taylor
Artist: Anne-Marie Quinn

Pupils worked with the artist to explore the theme of warfare and its impact on ordinary people, using Anne-Marie Quinn's work for reference. Art works, in the form of 'staffs of life' were made using objects, materials and words fixed to bandages, ribbons and timber. These contributed to a large-scale, composite installation, exploring a challenging theme with care and sensitivity.

Working with Galleries

THE PEOPLE OF EALING
BRENTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL, LONDON
Age range: 16-18
Teacher: Mike Roddy
Gallery: PM Gallery and House

An exhibition of work by Magnum women photographers provided a reference for pupils as they worked towards their own exhibition of photographs of the local community to be displayed at the PM Gallery and House. The photographs are accomplished pieces of photo-journalism, and demonstrate sophisticated understanding of approaches to depicting the variety of human life.

AWE AND WONDER
THE DERBY HIGH SCHOOL, LANCASHIRE
Age range: 11-13
Teacher: Rosene Haigh
Gallery: The Bury Art Gallery

An exhibition at the Bury Art Gallery of work by Helmut Schober and J.M.W.Turner provided an extension to a theme on which pupils were already working, linking art and science through the exploration of light and dark. The large, mixed-media art works and written work produced at the Gallery and in School are powerful and impressive.

Working with Resources

MOVEMENT AND STRUCTURES
DR CHALLONER'S HIGH SCHOOL, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE
Age range: 15-16
Teacher: Carol Breese
Resource: Alton Towers

The unusual starting point for this project was a visit to Alton Towers; this provided a physical and emotional perspective on the exploration of the themes, Movement and Structure. Making reference to work by relevant artists, pupils produced art works in a range of media. These are highly expressive and demonstrate the value of first-hand experience as inspiration.

DOORS TO JEWELLERY
LARKHALL ACADEMY, SOUTH LANARKSHIRE
Age range: 11-12
Teacher: Laura Bernstein
Resource: Images of doors from different cultures

Pupils looked at a range of door designs and then designed their own, thinking imaginatively about what might lie behind them. Work on colour contributed to the process, and ideas were developed into exquisitely detailed jewellery designs that were displayed at the Lighthouse, Scotland's Centre for Architecture, Design and the City in Glasgow.
