Highly Commended Entries 2004

The entries of seven schools were Highly Commended in the 2004 Artworks Awards:

Working with Artists

PENRICE LANGUAGE COLLEGE, CORNWALL
TEXTURE AND RELIEF
Age range: 14-15
Teacher: Sharon Watkins
Artist: Jenny Beavan
Motivated Pupils: Nicola Higman, Wayne Read, Laura Yates

Pupils studying for GCSE Applied Art worked with local ceramicist, Jenny Beavan to explore the sculptural possibilities of working with china clay - a material familiar to pupils in its local industrial applications. Pupils explored the properties of the medium, discussed the links with industry and experimented with glazes and decoration to produce sculptural pieces.

VICTORIA INFANT AND NURSERY SCHOOL, CUMBRIA
HOW DO I GET THERE?
Age range: 3-7
Teacher: Sue Cawood
Artists: Gail Baskett, Marion Booth, Ali McCaw

Over a year, three artists worked with pupils to support their individual artistic development, generated by their own ideas, experiences and interests. The artists used their skills and ideas to support, challenge and inspire the children. The project was celebrated in a huge exhibition that documented the creative process.

WILLOWS HIGH SCHOOL, CARDIFF
SUSTAINING OUR ENVIRONMENT
Age range: 11-15
Teacher: Jan Berry
Artist: Gail Wigley

Pupils across several year groups worked with the artist to develop work around the theme of rubbish and recycling. With a focus on introducing photography to groups who do not usually access this art form, and inspired by a visit to a tip, groups developed work using photogram techniques and pinhole, traditional and digital cameras.

Working with Galleries

HENRY BOX SCHOOL, OXFORDSHIRE
A MATTER OF CONTROVERSY
Age range: 13-14
Teacher: Christine Payne
Gallery: Modern Art Oxford

Trainee teachers on placement at the School developed workshops in which they explored ways to present contentious work to young people. Pupils responded to Jake and Dinos Chapman's work The Rape of Creativity through a sustained series of workshops that involved them in discussion, questioning, writing and sketching.

SHACKLEWELL PRIMARY SCHOOL, HACKNEY
THIS IS WHO I AM - THIS IS WHAT YOU SEE
Age range: 8-11
Teacher: Prue Barnes
Gallery: The Institute of International Visual Art
Motivated Pupils: Joanna Babtiste, Tayo Kolade, Nyasha McLean

Pupils visited the Gallery to see an exhibition on the theme of 'the veil', where they discussed the works with two artists, debating issues about race, culture and representation. Subsequently, they took part in several photography and film-making workshops to make their own work in response to the exhibition.

TRINITY C of E PRIMARY SCHOOL, HENLEY-ON-THAMES
CROSSING BOUNDARIES
Age range: 5-11
Headteacher: Eleanor Bedwin
Gallery: The River and Rowing Museum, Henley-on-Thames
Motivated Pupils: Olivia Boyce, Kurt Nichol, Lara Wirt

The whole school visited an exhibition of John Piper's work at the Museum. They took part in practical workshops inspired by his work, exploring a range of printmaking techniques and making stained-glass style panels. Pupils' work came together in the form of a huge banner of a 'foliate head', which was hung outside the Museum.

WARREN FARM PRIMARY, BIRMINGHAM
WISH YOU WERE HERE
Age range: 3-4
Teacher: Linda Baddeley
Gallery: Ikon Gallery, Birmingham
Motivated Pupils: Callum Lennon, Molly McKinlay, Chloe Smith

Over a nine-month period, children and their parents worked with photographic artist Karen McDonell to explore how their school environment compared to that of the Gallery. Working with Nikki Matthews of the Ikon Gallery, pupils used a number of different exhibitions to inspire their own photography work, using cameras for the first time.
