ARTWORKS COMMISSION 2004

Each year, Artworks has commissioned a limited-edition print from an internationally acclaimed artist with work in the Tate Collection. Past commissions have been by Antony Gormley, Richard Wentworth, Anish Kapoor and Julian Opie. Each artist has generously donated their work free of charge to the Artworks Awards.

In 2004, the special Artworks commission, entitled Spring Winter, was by Marc Quinn. The print is one of the paintings from the frozen flower garden series entitled Italian Landscape. Derived from a photographic image they are pigment prints using a unique technique. The Italian Landscape paintings, and a twelve metre high steel sculpture of a flower, were recently included in the Art of the Garden exhibition at Tate Britain.

Marc Quinn was born in London in 1964 and read History of Art at Cambridge University (1982-85), beginning working as a sculptor in 1984. Marc came to prominence in the early 1990s with his sculpture Self (1991), a refrigerated cast of his own head made using nine pints of his own blood. Since then, Marc has produced a diverse range of work, most of which focuses on the physical states of the body and addresses ideas about science, mortality and survival in our age of genetic manipulation. His winning sculpture commission, a portrait entitled Alison Lapper Pregnant, for the empty Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London, will be unveiled in 2005. It is to be carved out of one block of white marble and will stand 3.7 metres high. Marc's work is included in a wide range of public collections in the UK and internationally.

‘All too often art is sidelined in schools ... but we mustn’t give up. The piece that Artworks commissioned from me as an Award is intended to be an optimistic work showing that young talent can blossom from an unpromising environment.’

‘When the Marc Quinn prints arrived there were tears in the eyes of our students ... me too!’
